THE RESTORATION PROJECT OF ONE OF THE LAST "SUPER STAR" CONSTELLATION AIRLINERS
One of the most graceful and beautiful airliners ever built, the Lockheed Constellation, represented the ultimate in passenger airline performance and luxury during the 1950's.
After being prematurely replaced by jetliners, mass scrapings of this airliner took place in the 60's and 70's. Today there are only a few Constellation "survivors" left.
Lufthansa purchased three Constellations in 2007 and in 2008 built a new hanger in Auburn, Maine to house the planned restoration.
So began this huge restoration project... read and see more.
In 2011 and 2013, Bob and Gillian were fortunate to be able to personally visit the hanger in Maine and see some of the progress of the Super Star restoration.
Sadly, in April 2018, Lufthansa's executive management decided to shut down the still incomplete Super Star restoration project in Auburn.
The aircraft is being disassembled and moved to Germany, despite an on-line petition to Lufthansa with over 7,600 signatures from aviation enthusiasts all over the world.
There is little chance this Super Star will ever fly again.
