AIRFARE FEES
In 2008, airlines started charging consumers ancillary fees, over and above the cost of your airfare.
Airlines are still charging consumers ancillary fees made up of baggage, preferred seat selection, ticket changes and exchanges, pillows & blankets, meals & beverages and other a'la carte services, over and above the cost of their airfares. According to Federal data, The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that in 2017, all U.S. airlines combined charged consumers a total of $4.576 billion in baggage fees alone, up from $4.2 billion in 2016. It was also reported that consumers paid another $2.856 billion in reservation/change fees, down slightly from $2.9 billion in 2016. Total net profit for all U.S. airlines after taxes in 2017 was $15.5 billion, up 10.2% from 2016.
