Women traveling alone have to be more careful than men and have very different concerns when traveling. They can encounter a variety of difficulties and problems that can be avoided, if some basic precautions are taken. Both men and women need to be educated travelers but women need to plan each trip they take in advance to ensure their safety:
- Research and learn as much as possible about the destination you are going to visit, especially when visiting an unfamiliar city or foreign country.
- Religious and cultural beliefs can directly impact your visit. The clothes you wear and your demeanor should always comply with local customs and culture.
- At your hotel reception ask that your name and room number not be verbally vocalized with unknown people in the immediate area.
- Keep your hotel room door properly locked and secured when you retire. Do not open your door for anyone you are not expecting or know and call reception or security immediately if someone unknown is at your hotel door.
- Keep all personal items and your room key locked and secure when visiting the hotel fitness center.
- Use your hotel room safe for personal items, documents and cash.
- Make copies of all important travel documents, tickets, credit cards and keep them separately packed in case of loss or theft. You can also email travel documents to yourself so they will be retrievable when needed.
- Keep a hotel business card with hotel information handy when you leave the hotel and show the card to locals, taxi drivers, tour guides and local authorities if you get lost or into a difficult situation.
- Ask hotel concierge staff about hotel safety, recommended restaurants, tours, sightseeing and where to go safely in the area.
- You do not want to get lost in an unfamiliar city. Prearrange a shuttle ride, transfer or take a taxi from the airport to your hotel, especially if arriving at your destination late in the evening.
- If renting a car make sure you have a good map of the areas you intend visiting. Use a GPS to get around on unfamiliar roads. Always pre-plan your destination routes. Do not study your map in your rental car in broad daylight, or at night.
- Travel light and pack light. Trying to cope with excessive and heavy luggage is frustrating and could make you an easy target for pickpockets.
- Use a money belt for travel documents, credit cards and cash when out sightseeing.
- Carry one credit card at a time and only enough cash for the day's needs.
- Avoid expensive looking luggage and clothing when traveling. Use covered luggage tags with your office and not home information.
- Avoid looking like a tourist when sightseeing.
- Use a small compact camera and keep it out of sight when not actually taking pictures. If you use an expensive bigger camera, don't walk around with it hanging over your neck. Keep it hidden, not in a camera case, but a bag or your purse.
