E-TRAVEL TIPS AND INFORMATION
Dear Travel Friends,
BAGGAGE AND AIRLINE BAGGAGE FEES
Most airlines charge fees of $0, when included in your fare, to $250.00+ /bag, for checking bags.
Baggage fees can differ substantially when flying domestic or international and airlines can change baggage fees at any time.
Compare baggage fees before you purchase your airline tickets and save travel dollars. Some airlines charge more if you check your bags at the airport than if you pay online in advance.
Properly tag all your bags, including carry-on's, before you check your baggage.
Make sure at the baggage counter that your bags are tagged with the correct destination city code.
Attach a colorful, adjustable baggage strap around each case making it easier to identify at baggage claim and less likely someone may mistake your bag for theirs.
Take pictures of all your bags. Lost baggage is on the increase and having pictures and tags will help airline personnel identify and find missing bags. Having a bag go missing on any trip is upsetting and inconvenient.
FROM GILLIAN'S DESK - STAYING IN CONTACT WHEN TRAVELING INTERNATIONALLY - FOLLOW-UP.
In last month's newsletter, I wrote about our trip to Europe and how we intended to try and stay in contact. Although I have since learned a bit more about the subject, our efforts were only partially successful. By no means an expert, I find the subject very frustrating and complicated. Here is what I learned.
HOT SPOT DEVICE: We were advised by family not to go the route of using our US phones as SIM cards cannot just be switched from one phone to another, can cost more if used in another EU country and long application forms with your personal data and contact information have to be completed to get a SIM card, because of the increase of terrorism in Europe.
Family loaned us a rechargeable internet hot spot device for which we purchased a Swiss SIM card and 1 GB of data, for traveling in Switzerland. The hot spot worked great and was very convenient, especially when traveling in our rental car. Unfortunately, our 1 GB of data lasted only a few days. On the road the company that supplied the SIM card, could not service it. After hours at a cell phone store, their wonderful agent managed to reload our device with 3 GB of data. We were advised to use the internet only when needed, not to download and watch videos and to turn the hot spot device off when not in use. $100.00 later, our data did not even last a week.
WORLDWIDE WI-FI: Information on worldwide Wi-Fi hot spots apps for Android and i-OS, are a click away. Visit a Starbucks, McDonald's or any other restaurant and they usually have public internet, probably not secure! Hotels today should have password protected internet service included in the price of your room, but not all hotel internet services are equal or secure.
I-PHONE MESSAGING: I was told at the end of our trip that by setting up iMessage on your iPhone 6 or 6S, you can message internationally for free depending on your plan, but only iPhone to iPhone. Maybe someone out there can explain exactly how this done?
WHATSAPP: We downloaded the app but found it difficult to make contact back home and had to wait for responses, which were not interactive and immediate.
FACEBOOK: One can message friends internationally by installing messenger.
USE A GLOBAL CELL PHONE RENTAL COMPANY: Travel Travel has partnered withTravelCell, a premier global cellphone rental company, to offer the ability to stay in touch, at reasonable rates, from wherever you're going. This is expensive and did not work well for me on a previous trip.
I invite you to start a conversation with your input and suggestions. We will feature suitable responses in future newsletters and hopefully help our many travel friends, who like me, have encountered problems staying in contact, when traveling abroad.
Thank you for choosing Travel Travel we greatly appreciate your business and look forward to serving you future travel needs.
