Dear Travel Friends
"FROM DEBBIE'S DESK": PLANNING YOUR DREAM HONEYMOON
Agency owner Gillian asked me what travel I most love to book for our clients? Without hesitation, my answer is - honeymoons! Knowing my passion for this very special travel niche, she asked me if I would write an article on booking incredible honeymoons for our May newsletter. There is something so special about sharing in a happy couple's planning excitement. I am so honored every time I am asked to use my experience and expertise to help plan and arrange one of the most special, memorable and unforgettable trips of their lives. I have noted some basic honeymoon questions that will help in properly planning a dream honeymoon:
Plan early and give yourself plenty of time to research and get exactly what you both want. Your honeymoon must be very special!
Your honeymoon is for both of you, Share in the planning and decision making and it is important you both agree and are satisfied with the final choices made.
Budget to avoid disappointment due to insufficient funds.
Discuss expectations and priorities. Agree where you can save and where you want to splurge. It may be OK to fly coach, but your honeymoon resort should be extra special.
Give yourselves a chance to recover from the stress of your wedding extravaganza. Don't try to do too much on your honeymoon. Be pampered rest, relax and enjoy each other.
Register your wedding and honeymoon with us at Travel Travel. Monetary gifts from family and friends can be cumulatively added toward the total cost of your honeymoon and we will administer your wedding registry for you, at no extra charge. You won't be able to amend your passport, driver's license and other official documents until after your honeymoon. So, use your maiden name on visas, airline tickets and other travel documents, all to match all your existing official documents.
Things may not always go as planned, but being flexible and keeping your sense of humor can go a long way in overcoming any unforeseen situations that may arise.
Your honeymoon destination's tourist board will have the most current information on restaurants, activities and festive events. Check them out, then do as much or little as you want.
Tell the whole world you are honeymooners and enjoy special treatment at hotels, on day trips, from locals, at restaurants and from folks you may meet.
Email me personally, or complete our Honeymoon Planner . I am ready to assist in planning your most romantic and memorable dream honeymoon ever, for you.
Thank you for choosing Travel Travel in the past and look forward to serving you in the near future.
SVALBARD: AN OUT-OF-THE-ORDINARY SUMMER ADVENTURE
By Cindy Miller Hopkins
Full-time professional wildlife photographer and Travel Travel client for over 25 years!
If you're looking for a summer destination that's out of the ordinary, you need to start thinking out of the box, the SANDBOX that is. Not every summer vacation needs to include a beach. I, for one, would rather skip the sandbox and head for the ICEBOX! No need for new flip-flops, because I prefer packing parkas. An icy vacation isn't for everybody, but for those with an adventurous spirit in their heart, and antifreeze in their veins, a summer getaway to Svalbard can be the trip of a lifetime.
If you've never heard of the Svalbard Archipelago, it's one of the northernmost land areas in the world. Part of the Kingdom of Norway, it's located well north of the capital city of Oslo, and lies even further north than its neighboring island, Iceland. It's made up of several groups of islands that are home to three National Parks, two nature preserves, and 15 bird sanctuaries. The largest, and most well-known island, is Spitsbergen. The area has a long history of whaling and Polar exploration, but what really draws most of today's visitors to this remote location is its abundant wildlife and stunning landscapes.
Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the islands. From the flashy pink-footed goose to the iconic puffin and majestic snowy owl, Svalbard is a bird lover's paradise. With a bit of patience, you can find arctic fox, reindeer, and several species of whales. If you're lucky, you can spot a shy walrus hauled up on an ice floe. But the most sought-after sighting is a view of the spectacular polar bear. The islands are one the most important breeding areas for these great white predators. I was blessed to see eight bears in a 16-day period, including mothers with cubs. It was magical.
Highlights from my trip included a 1am wakeup call to see a pod of five blue whales. (Remember, it's still light at that time of the morning during the Arctic summer.) Glacier hiking, whale watching, seeing my first walrus, getting above 80° North, and of course - the bears, all topped my list of favorite memories.
Between wildlife sightings, the impressive landscapes will keep you out on the open decks for hours. Agile zodiac boats allow access to even the most remote areas. Huge icebergs bump up against rocky shores while towering mountains perfectly frame your views. My favorite spot was Zeipeloden, where the natural geologic process of cryoturbation leaves large stone rings across the landscape, encouraging you to imagine you're on another planet. Large glaciers, like Monacobreen and 14th July Glacier, are equally impressive. Conditions permitting, hiking up to the top of a glacier or even taking a bone-chilling "polar plunge" in the icy ocean are all on the list of possibilities.
While a few "regular" cruise ships call on some of the larger ports in the area, like Tromso, Longyearbyen and even the scientific outpost of Ny-Alesund, the best way to experience this special area is on a small expedition ship. Personally, I like Silversea Expeditions. Though not inexpensive, they always deliver a 5-star experience. They have a 1-to-1 staff to passenger ratio with outstanding naturalists and expert guides. However, there are several companies to choose from that do similar trips. Travel Travel can help you find the perfect tour .
The best time to visit is in the height of summer in June/July/August.
It's warmer than you think! Pack lots of breathable of layers.
WATERPROOF outerwear is essential. Even if the weather is nice, riding in zodiacs close to whales can be a VERY wet adventure!
When the sun comes out, the reflection off the water, snow, and ice can be brutal! Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, a good hat, and sunglasses.
Photo opportunities are never ending, so be sure to have an extra battery on hand, more memory cards than you think you will ever need, and a waterproof camera cover.
Put some chemical hand warmers in your pockets to keep your hands warm while up on deck.
