E-TRAVEL TIPS AND INFORMATION

Dear Travel Friends
UPDATE - RENTING A CAR: YOUR POTENTIAL EXPOSURE AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!
In our office and past newsletters, we have warned clients that renting a car could easily result in major financial liability for the renter, should your rental be stolen, damaged, totaled or become subject to "loss of use".
The following rental options could help you decide which option is right for you and also potentially save you from a financial disaster:
(1) Accept your rental car company's CDW & LDW waiver insurance. Ask questions if you don't understand your selected coverage's. Are you comfortable paying your deductible if anything happened to your rental car? Only "named drivers" can drive your rental car and to add named drivers, costs you extra.
PRO: A good option if you want to "walk away" with a reasonable or zero liability, should anything happen to your rental car. Know that it doesn't take much damage to your rental to more than cover the extra cost of full insurance. You will not have a claim against your auto insurance.
CON: Considerably more expensive.
(2) Use your primary auto insurance, which covers any vehicle driven by a named driver. You will have to decline rental CDW and LDW insurance and pay extra for named drivers. Check with your insurer that loss of use is covered and reconfirm your deductible, before renting.
PRO: You loose nothing if nothing happens to your rental car. If something major happens, your liability is your auto policy deductible and a claim against your auto policy.
CON: Should you have a minor mishap costing less than your deductible, you will be responsible to repair the damage.
(3) Some credit cards offer secondary rental car coverage, at no extra charge. All rental car charges must be charged on their card. You should check that your card company offers this coverage before renting. You will have to decline the rental CDW and LDW insurance. Your auto insurance will be your primary insurance and the credit card is your secondary insurance.
PRO: None.
CON: Your credit card company will only pay for what your primary insurance doesn't pay. You will have to file two insurance claims, which may be complicated and time consuming. You will have a claim against your primary auto insurance.
(4) If you purchase travel insurance coverage, you may have the option of adding rental car insurance to your policy. Contact us for more information, rates and coverage.
PRO: None.
CON: Your primary auto insurance is your primary insurer and the travel insurance secondary. You will have to file two insurance claims, which may be complicated and time consuming. You will have a claim against your primary auto insurance.
(5) Before you drive off a rental lot, properly inspect your rental! Take pictures, detail and confirm all damage in writing with a rental agent signature. Confirm minor dents and scratches as being considered fair wear and tear by the rental company.
PRO: Save yourself the expense and aggravation of having to prove you were not responsible for any preexisting damage made to your rental car.
CON: None.
