CHOOSE YOUR AIRLINE SEATS AT A PRICE
Airline seat assignments have gone the way of checked luggage, ticket changes and other fees as airlines shift from selling all-inclusive tickets to preferred seat selection at an additional cost to consumers.
Now airlines reap the benefits of seat assignment charges, causing passenger confusion and unfairly penalizing families who want to sit together.
According to data from IdeaWorks Company, ancillary airline fees, not included in base ticket prices, are expected to reach $92.9 billion in 2018, up from $82.2 billion in 2017.
Last year, baggage fees made up the bulk of ancillary revenue, with reserved seating fees coming in second.
Unlike baggage fees, reserved-seating fees are more revenue positive to airlines, being technology driven and low cost to implement and support.

RIVER LOCKS
Locks, an amazing feat of engineering, make it possible for river boats to sail either up or down stream, solving river navigation problems like fast flowing water, rapids and shallow or rocky river sections.
The lock, a simple and ingenious solution, is a canal or dam capable of mechanically adjusting its water level to either the low or high river water levels, at each end of the lock.
This is done by either introducing water into the lock, or draining water out of the lock through hydraulically controlled gates or watertight doors.
To sail "downstream", the lock is filled to the high river level with the first gate open and the second gate closed. Boats sail into the lock and the first gate is closed. Water is drained out of the lock to the river's low level. The first gate stays closed, the second gate is opened and the boats can sail out of the lock and continue down river. This procedure is reversed for boats to sail "upstream".
Locks play an critical role in today's river boat industry. More interesting lock information.
