safety when children fly alone

SAFETY WHEN CHILDREN FLY ALONE
If children are going to fly alone, some basic precautions should be taken to ensure their safety. Millions of children fly alone each year, the majority without incident. Special rules apply to these young travelers.
  • Unaccompanied minors or "UM's" are treated as adult passengers and guardians are asked to agree airlines are not responsible for their UM's, during their flights.
  • Airlines require guardians complete all requested information pertaining to their UM's.
  • Airlines charge $75 to $150 per one-way flight for UM services.
  • UM age requirements are five to fifteen years old and airlines have different age restrictions on connecting flights for UM's.
  • Research varying airline charges and policies for two or more UM's traveling together.
  • Don't join regular check-in lines as most airports have sign posted special assistance areas for UM check-in.
  • All UM drop-off, and pick-up information must be given to airline personnel, before boarding.
  • Guardians must remain in contact with airline personnel until advised their UM is safely on-board and their aircraft has taken off.
  • Airlines provide UM's with ID so they can be properly identified by  all contact airline personnel.
  • Airline personnel accompany UM's through airport security, to the gate and safely on-board the aircraft.
  • In-flight, UM's are supervised by the flight crew.
  • On arrival at their destination, UM's are handed over to airport airline personnel, escorted to the arrivals area and released to their meeting party, after proper ID verification.
For more information on unaccompanied minor air travel, contact your airline or Travel Travel, before ticket purchase.
