You do need to protect yourself from ID theft when shopping and using ATM's in the US, or any other country you may be visiting. Here are some simple precautions you can take to stop thieves from stealing your ID, personal and credit information.
- Be aware in overcrowded areas, if someone asks you a question, bumps into you or tries to distract you. You may have been targeted by pickpockets who seldom work alone but in groups. While one pickpocket distracts you, the other pickpockets you.
- When sightseeing, carry only the credit card, cash and ID you may need for the day and limit your exposure to theft. Leave all other valuables in your hotel safe.
- Keep copies of your ID's, passports, credit cards and other important documents separate from the originals when traveling. If stolen, all information needed for ID verification, credit card cancellation and follow-up action will be immediately available.
- Wearing a money belt hidden under your clothes is a very effective precaution, but your money is not easily accessible.
- On day trips dress to blend-in instead of looking like a tourist. Hanging large expensive cameras around your neck while sightseeing is looking for trouble. Use a small compact camera which can be stored in your pocket or purse till needed.
- Ask the concierge at your hotel about the safety of city areas you will be visiting.
- Be aware of ID theft at the cash register or when paying a server. Don't let your credit card out of your sight if possible, and go to the cashier yourself and pay the bill.
- Be careful when using a debit card, as money in a related bank account can be fraudulently withdrawn, in a matter of minutes.
- Before drawing cash from an ATM, check who else is in line waiting to use the ATM. Wait if there are too many people in line, or find another ATM. Avoid drawing larger sums of cash from an ATM, stay safe and use a bank instead. Avoid using an ATM in a deserted area. You could be targeted from a distance to be robbed after leaving the ATM.
- Don't fill out in-store credit card applications for on-the-spot discounts in busy shopping areas. You don't have any idea what could happen to your application, after you leave the store?
