Car rental rates can vary greatly. Compare total price, including taxes and surcharges and take advantage of any special offers and membership discounts. Rental car companies offer various insurance and waiver options. You may save yourself future frustration, hassles and major expense by taking note of the following and making a few phone calls, prior to taking delivery of your next rental car:
- Check in advance with your car insurance agent to avoid duplicating any coverage you may already have and save on unneeded extra car rental insurance charges.
- The insurance coverage you choose could save you from ruining your trip plus the financial devastation of having to pay for replacement or repair and loss of use of a rental vehicle.
- You could accept your rental car company's collision, loss and damage waiver (CDW & LDW) insurance, which will substantially increase the daily cost of your rental car. Check coverage and that your deductible is acceptable. This insurance may be a good option if you want to just walk away, should anything happen to your rental car.
- Some credit cards will cover the loss or damage of your rental car, at no extra charge if all related rental car charges are charged on their card. Some cards do not offer this coverage. Credit card coverage is usually secondary insurance with your personal car insurance being the primary insurer. This means your credit card company will only pay for what your "primary" car insurance will not cover.
- Before you rent you should contact both your car insurance agent and your credit card company for coverage, preconditions and you what you would have to pay should you have to claim.
- A copy of your primary auto insurance coverage information should be readily available when renting a car.
- Confirm in advance what type and value of rental car your credit card and car insurance will cover and add all possible "named drivers" to your contract.
- If you accept credit card insurance and personal vehicle coverage, the rental company's CDW & LDW insurance coverage must be declined.
- If you purchase travel insurance coverage for your trip, you may have the option of adding primary rental insurance to your travel policy at a lower rate or better coverage than offered by your rental car company.
- Finally, before you drive off a rental lot, properly inspect your rental car in daylight or a well lit area, with a rental company agent present. Take pictures of any noticeable damage found on your rental car and detail all preexisting damage, on your rental contract. Minor, fair wear and tear, dents and scratches should be noted on your rental contract. Have the rental car agent sign and acknowledge all preexisting damage after inspection. By signing a rental car contract without properly completing the damage section, you could expose yourself to charges for any damage done to the rental, which after-the-fact will be very difficult to prove, was preexisting.
