When traveling, it makes good sense to anticipate treating minor ailments or emergencies that could occur while on your trip. Be proactive and make up a small basic first aid kit, containing items you may need.
- Your first aid kit should at least contain: band-aids, bandages, hand sanitizer, antiseptic hand wipes, antibiotic cream, pain relievers, cold, cough and diarrhea medications, a thermometer and tweezers.
- Be sure you have sufficient prescription medications for your trip, all properly labeled and kept in their original containers.
- Imagine what could happen if you lost or broke your only pair of prescription glasses on vacation! Pack an extra pair of glasses with a copy of your latest glasses prescription, in a hard case.
- Over-the- counter medications for minor common ailments, purchased in a foreign country, are usually different to those purchased at home. Make the over-the-counter medications you know and use part of your travel first aid kit.
- Be careful of the water you drink and the food you eat when traveling. When in doubt, ask your hotel reception, your tour company guides or any knowledgeable local you meet.
- The general rule is if you can't peel it or cook it, don't eat it.
