E-TRAVEL TIPS AND INFORMATION
Dear Travel Friends,
"KONSTANZ AM BODENSEE" - CONSTANCE, ON LAKE CONSTANCE - ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PARTS OF GERMANY
The largest lake in Germany, bordering Austria and Switzerland, is Lake Constance. Offering strikingly beautiful scenery, its majestic expanse of water and about 168 miles of shoreline, offer diverse attractions, many quaint and historic lakeside towns and attractive villages, set against magnificent views of the Swiss Alps.
The area is a world renowned European summer vacation destination, drawing hikers, cyclists and nature and wine lovers from far and wide. Water sports, sailing, simply swimming in the refreshing lake water, old castles, beautiful gardens and being rich in culture and history are only a few of the offerings of this diverse and beautiful area.
Constance, the largest city on Lake Constance and with a population of about 82,000, is close to the Swiss border, is an important cultural, theatrical and musical center and is the home of the renowned University of Konstanz.
Some of the most popular tourist attractions in the Constance area are the "Flower Island" of Mainau, a small 110 acre Island with a semi-tropical climate and the home of the most beautifully set botanical gardens, a butterfly house, a castle and a baroque chapel. Constance's town Harbor with the fabled, offensive and historically inaccurate landmark statue "Imperia", erected in 1993. The Monastic Island of Reichenau, a masterpiece of three churches provide a panorama of early medieval monastic architecture in central Europe and the German Stilt House Museum, an open-air museum reconstruction of stone and bronze age homes of the area, both being UNESCO World Heritage sites.

FROM GILLIAN'S DESK - "VINEGAR PUDDING" - (before you say anything - try it!)
This month I wanted to try something different and not travel related for our newsletter. After much thought and with Thanksgiving in mind, I decided to share an old, simple and secret family desert recipe with you. For decades, our family and friends have enjoyed Vinegar Pudding served as desert after family, party and holiday meals. This delicious South African desert recipe was handed down by my grandmother to my mother, from her to me and on to my daughters. Having only grandsons, who love it, will certainly not stop this mouthwatering desert from continuing to be passed on to future generations.
1 teaspoon of baking powder.
1/2 cup of sugar.
1 cup of milk.
A pinch of salt.
1 cup of flour.
1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.
1 tablespoon of vinegar.
I tablespoon of apricot jam.
Mix together until all lumps are dissolved. Pour into a 9" diameter glass Pyrex dish.
Bake for 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees F, until set.
The All Important Sauce
1/3 cup of sugar.
1 cup of boiling water.
1 cup of milk.
1 teaspoon of vanilla.
Mix and heat until the sugar melts. Pour the sauce all over the pudding as soon as it comes out of the oven and allow to completely saturate and moisten the pudding. Serve warm, on its own, or with cream or ice cream.
As we say in South Africa, "geniet" - enjoy!
