E-TRAVEL TIPS AND INFORMATION
Dear Travel Friends
"FROM GILLIAN'S DESK":
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE SHIP FOR YOUR CRUISE
I am often asked by clients looking for the right cruise, what cruise ship should they choose? A cruise ship's size can determine cost, the number and age of passengers, the levels of luxury, amenities, features, activities, dining options and entertainment available on board. A ship's size could make or break your vacation. As a general rule, bigger ships have more features and amenities while smaller ships tend to offer a less crowded higher-end atmosphere, at a higher price.
These floating cities can accommodate up to 6000 passengers and have all the amenities and features one could wish for, all "under one roof" and supported by a crew of thousands. Activities for all age groups are endless. But, being so huge has its disadvantages. One could easily feel overwhelmed and lost in the crowds or on the ship itself. The bigger the ship the more restricted and crowded on board and in ports of call. Mega ships are more popular with families and groups traveling together. (See our article on Harmony of the Seas below).
Midsize ships are less intimidating and carry up to to 2500 passengers. Most of the standard cruise ship amenities, activities, entertainment and dining options are found on these ships, only on a smaller scale and they can be crowded. These ships can go where Mega ships cannot, so there are more destination choices. These ships are also popular with families and groups.
With fewer than 1000 passengers, these ships are generally more low key, more luxurious, with fewer amenities, features and activities and tend to be more pricey. Small ships cater more to the sophisticated traveler, offer higher end service and dining and visit more exclusive ports. Premium prices and the simplicity of small-ship luxury cruises often attract a more mature clientele.
River cruises rarely accommodate more than 250 passengers. Because of their size they offer limited amenities, features and dining options. Their focus is on local culture, enticing ports of call, usually close to city centers, where none of the aforementioned ships can dock. Shore excursions are often included in the cruise price and are hosted by local guides, familiar with local culture, customs and cuisine. Evening entertainment is often provided by locals. River cruises are pricey and also attract a more mature passenger mix.
