CUSTOMS REGULATIONS ON YOUR RETURN TO THE US
There are regulations travelers must comply with when returning to the US from abroad. Other than your personal information, some important items to note on this form are:
International passengers arriving at US International Airports can enjoy a quicker and smoother journey through the customs and immigration process with new automated passport control (APC) kiosks provided by US Customs and Border Protection. The paper US Customs Declaration Form 6059B is no longer given to returning US and Canadian citizens. The self-service kiosks allow passengers to provide their travel document, bio metric data and customs declaration electronically prior to speaking to a U.S. Customs officer. This increases efficiency and streamlines processes at ports of entry by removing the responsibility for Customs officers to scan and check every traveler's documents. The kiosks have been approved by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for accurate data collection and verification of passenger facial and fingerprint bio metrics, against their passports. Passengers use a touch screen to complete their customs declaration form and the system automatically verifies and validates their travel documents, checks flight information, captures a face image and up to ten fingerprints. The full procedure can be completed in 90 seconds or less. At the end of the self-service process, each traveler receives a printed receipt, lines up in a fast track lane for final clearance by a Customs Officer. Gillian and Bob used the new process for the first time on their return from South Africa through Atlanta this month. There report there were literally thousands of travelers waiting to be processed the Customs hall was packed. Sufficient Customs agents were on hand to direct and explain and we were in and out of Customs much more efficiently and quickly than with the previous manual system, a big deal after traveling for 24 hours. Make a list of items not allowed back to the US and use it as a guideline on what not to pack in your luggage to avoid problems at customs on your return to the US.
Be warned, Gillian and Bob had a problem when returning to the US. We had forgotten to dispose of one apple before we disembarked our flight from South Africa. As good citizens, we approached a customs official and told him about the apple. He asked for our APC printed receipts, wrote an "A" on them and instructed us to trash the apple. We subsequently found the "A" stood for "agriculture". On exiting customs we handed our print outs to the officer and were immediately ushered into the agriculture inspection line where our luggage was again X rayed and inspected for "agricultural contraband". An hour later we exited customs and luckily were not late for our flight connection.
