AVOID BAGGAGE DISASTERS

A little time spent on your luggage choices before your trip can help avoid baggage disasters. Make sure your cases are in good working order before you leave home. Check locks and zippers are working, handles are secure and extend properly and wheels are not broken or loose.  Good quality luggage is designed to withstand the baggage handing process and is made lightweight without compromising strength, to better protect contents. The longer your trip the larger the case, but always keep extra baggage weight costs in mind. Check how heavy your cases are to carry before you leave on vacation. If possible, for short trips,  use a carry-on case only. Pack only necessary items, don’t check your bag and there will be no waiting for baggage collection at your destination. A great idea for transporting those vacation purchases home is to pack a smaller case inside your large case. When you return home, use the smaller case and more space in the larger case for those extra items. To more easily identify your cases at baggage collection, personalize them with a colorful baggage strap. It’s amazing how many similar looking cases come off the same airplane! Don’t lock your cases unless using certified TSA locks. They may be returned from security, plastic wrapped with broken-open locks.

VOLUNTEERING ON VACATION GROWS IN POPULARITY
Tour companies are springing up nationwide that offer trips to other countries where travelers use their vacation time to help the world as part of a new, emerging trend known as “volunteerism.” It’s like the Peace Corps, only on a shorter scale and with the caveat that travelers pay several thousands of dollars for the experience. The number of companies offering these “vacations” has grown by about 70% in the past two years and the number of Americans taking these trips, estimated at about 20,000 last year, is also increasing. GREEN HOTELS

The green and health conscious movements that have swept through other industries are having a major influence on today’s national lodging business. Why are these trends remaking the hotel business and who is pushing them?  It’s the younger Generation X and Y members that are changing the hotel industry. They hold important jobs, have the disposable income to vacation and arrange meetings in hotels that uphold their principles. Different generations do things differently and the younger generation is closely linked to the environmental movement. A recent survey revealed that almost 50% of US travelers now consider some environmental factors when planning their vacations. In the past few years the hotel industry has responded positively but travelers need to beware of hotels that could be only “green-washing” their credentials to enhance their image.
