E-TRAVEL TIPS AND INFORMATION

By Bob Rosenthal, January, 2012.

Dear Travel Friend

Every month, Travel Travel will email you up-to-date travel industry information which
should not only be interesting but could affect your future travel arrangements and
decisions. Should you have any travel related questions, please contact us .
If you intend allowing your children to fly anywhere alone, be sure to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Millions of children fly alone each year, the majority without incident. Children who fly alone without a parent or guardian are called "Unaccompanied Minor" or "UM" by the airlines.

WHEN CHILDREN FLY ALONE.......
Special rules apply to these young travelers.
Legally, an unaccompanied minor is treated as an adult passenger and you will be asked to agree that your airline is not taking on responsibility of guardianship of your child during the flight.
When booking, airlines require that parents or guardians complete a form with all relevant information for the child.
Most airlines charge extra per one-way flight for their UM services and charges would vary between $75 and $100 for most major airlines.
Age requirements are between five and fourteen and on some airlines up to fifteen years old.
If two or more children are traveling together, most airlines will charge only one fee.
For a child traveling on more than one airline a fee will be charged by each airline and different airline policies will apply.
Not all airlines will accept UM flight connections and some airlines may have further age restrictions on flight connections.

Most airports have a special assistance area for UM check-in. Look for signs or ask airline representatives before joining the regular check-in line.
All neccessary information for drop-off and pick-up including your's child's name, age and parent or guardian's information must be given to airline personnel before boarding.
Parents or guardians are asked to remain in contact with airline personnel until advised that their child is safely on-board the aircraft.
Airlines provide ID to UM's so your child can be properly identified by all airline personnel.
Airport personnel will accompany your child through airport security, to the gate and safely on-board the aircraft.
In-flight, your child will be supervised by the flight crew.
At their destination, UM's are handed over to airport personnel who will escort your child to the arrivals area. There, after ID verification, your child will be released to their meeting party.
