TIME FOR A SENSIBLE AND UNIVERSAL APPROACH TO AIRLINE SECURITY
Airline passengers have to show photo ID, stand in long security lines, have their carry-on luggage searched and x-rayed, give up their nail clippers, drinks, cigarette lighters and more, pack their liquids in plastic bags for inspection and even remove their shoes and belts. All this to keep our skies safe and terrorists off airplanes. Up to now the traveling public has accepted and co-operated, with these policies and inconveniences in the name of flying safely and security. What happened on Christmas Day aboard an international flight from Amsterdam to Detroit has left us all wondering whether all the policies and sacrifices made in the name of airline security since 911, have actually made a difference. What have we actually learnt from the past? While every airline passenger has been subjected to random searches and scrutiny, a terrorist from a foreign country passed through security unchallenged with enough explosives to blow an airliner out of the sky! It seems that despite all the systems, safeguards and policies, known terrorist information "dots" were not connected, proof of a serious breach of security. Had it not been for vigilent and responsive passengers on the flight, this country would have experienced another shattering act of terrorism! It should not take an attempted act of terrorism to show the flaws in the airline security system. Passengers will likely be subjected to another round of inconveniences that may include further sacrifices of freedoms and privacy. There is talk of more digital security scanners, costing hundreds of millions of dollars being installed in airports, increasing passenger aggravation and further slowing down the security process. As tested, scanners won't help security much and will only motivate terrorists to find new means of attack. Terrorism will never be stopped, but it can be deterred. Critics ask, why not spend more on bomb-sniffing dogs, closer monitoring of terrorist watch lists and better shared national and international intelligence. It is time the US Transportation Security Administration as well as national agencies in charge of airline security in every country originating internatonal flights, take positive steps toward more sensible and universal international airline security policies.
