Major US Airlines reported they collected more than $2.4 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2006 alone, by charging ancillary fees for checked overweight and oversize baggage, in-flight food and drink, ticket charge fees and other miscellaneous fees and charges. Airlines started unbundling services and charging them in an a la carte fashion in the summer of 2008 and have made no secret of their intent to expand this type of pricing. The long-languishing Airline Passengers Bill of Rights, legislation that would require airlines to adhere to certain customer-service procedures when planes full of people sit on tarmacs during extended delays, is back. It had died during the last Congress. Basically, the bill requires airlines to ensure that travelers are not unnecessarily trapped on airplanes for excessive periods of time, or deprived of food, water, or adequate restrooms. The airlines fiercely fought the legislation last year and will do so again now, in a new legislative environment that may be more supportive of the initiative. The legislation is the brainchild of Kate Hanni, a California woman who was stranded with her husband and son for almost 10 hours on a parked plane in Texas in late 2006, along with thousands of other passengers on flights affected by bad weather.  Hanni has spent the last two years organizing a grassroots coalition to press for the legislation. She's also tirelessly worked the halls of Congress and various state legislatures. Her group's Web site is at www.flyersrights.org for more information

Experts say that it actually takes the body one day per time zone that we cross, to fully recover from jetlag. Some folks are more affected by jetlag than others. Here are a few suggestions to help cope with jetlag.
If flying across numerous times zones, always reset your watch to your destination time when you leave your departure airport, and stay on the new time zone time for the duration of the flight. This assists your body clock to adjust.
Long haul airline services normally depart daytime and in the evening. Dependent on which direction you are traveling, generally if you leave in the evening you will arrive early morning and a daytime service will arrive late evening. You must decide to sleep while traveling or when you get to your destination. Having difficulty getting to sleep at your destination could  worsen the jet lag effect.
Avoid drinking alcohol in flight. The pressurized air in the cabin causes your body to dehydrate faster, and alcohol affects the body clock by not giving you a full and refreshing sleep.
Drink as much water as possible during the flight. This will help to keep you hydrated.
It is highly recommended to regularly move around the aircraft when in-flight. Walk up and down the isle every one to two hours and do airline suggested stretching exercises while in your seat to keep the blood circulating, to stop blood clots and joint stiffness.
On arrival at your destination in daylight, try not to go to sleep even if you are tired. Instead have a hot shower or bath, go outdoors and into the sunshine, start sight seeing and walk. The exercise and fresh air will help you body clock adjust faster to your new time zone.
